SHOE TERMS
Before
you know how to manufacture the shoe you should be aware of the terms and the
parts of the shoe.So here we go for the fundamental shoe terms but remember to
hold the shoe in your hand so that as we will go through the parts
simultaneously you examine the shoe as well.
- Aglet:
The
plastic sheath at the end of a shoelace which makes the lace easier to thread
through the eyelet holes of a shoe.
- Ankle
strap: A strap attached at the rear of the shoe that
encircles the ankle. Usually features an adjustable buckle or elastic.
- Ankle
Wrap: Straps that are meant to be wrapped around and tied
around the ankle for a stylish accent.
- Apron
Toe: A type of toe characterized by a large component that
covers the front of the toe and has visible edges or stitching.
- Arch:
The
high, curved part of the sole of the foot, located between the ball of the foot
and the heel. This term can also refer to the raised are of the insole of the
shoe, for padding and support of the arch of the foot.
- Bellow
Tongue: its is the type of tongue which act as the single
component and attached to vamp or quarter.
- Breath-ability:
A layman’s term meaning the ability of a shoe material to absorb and moisture
that is to ventilate easily.
- Brogue:
heavy court with perforation and gimiping, often with wingtip.
- Buffing:
Removing a thin layer from the grain side of the sole or insole by use of
abrasive to give it a finer look or to allow the penetration of colour and
prevent cracking.
- Court:
General term including a low-cut shoe with lacing attachment over the instep
- Derby:
A open throat, laced shoe with a tongue, cut in one piece with the camp or separately.
The quarter lies over the vamp.
- Insole:
usually the inner sole of the shoe on which the foot rets and actually get is
contact with. Usually made of fibrous material like cellulose.
- Last:
A three dimensional mould or a replica of the human foot made of wood, plastic
or metal which is used for shoe making.
